The Passing of Peter D. Bell

Peter Bell, a chair emeritus of the Inter-American Dialogue, passed away Friday, April 4, following a valiant battle with cancer. "All of us who were fortunate to know and work with Peter over the years are terribly saddened by this news," Michael Shifter, the Dialogue's president, wrote in a note to members and staff. "He was one of our founders and remained a stalwart over three decades...His love for and commitment to Latin America never wavered. We will greatly miss Peter's wisdom, judgment and rare moral compass." Bell served as president of CARE USA for ten years, and had earlier been president of the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, senior associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, president of the Inter-American Foundation, and deputy undersecretary of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. At the outset of his career, he worked for 12 years with the Ford Foundation, including 10 years with its Latin American program. MORE
